Tony, You're right! :) I just scanned through the docs and it does look like it will cost $1350. The other thing you have to think about when comparing the use of X and Y coordinates and the use of the PDF Block tool is that if you give a PDFlib block a bunch of text (maybe more than should go in it) it will automatically size the text down to fit and you also have the option of making the block a multi-line block; whereas, if you tried to use X and Y coordinates it would get very tricky keeping your text within the bounds you are working with.

Our budget isn't very large either (when is it ever?:)

According to page 153 of the PDFLib manual, the template-driven fill_textblock function does require the PPS, not just PDI. So I guess it will set you back $1350 + however much Acrobat Standard costs to use the Block Plugin to make the templates. It still beats having to calculate the x,y coordinates of every place you would need to place text on a form though.

Tony, We're still in development on our PDF project so I have not paid for the PDFLib software yet; we're using the demo version currently. From what I can tell you need to purchase the PDFlib + PDI package which is about $900. For what we're working on we dont have a <em>huge</em> budget but I can't see how to do what we want any other way besides PDFlib and the PDFlib block tool. If you need more in depth code examples of how we're populating our pdf's let me know, I would be happy to share.

I'm looking to do basically the same thing on a project I'm working on. I was reading through the pdflib docs... does this require the PDFlib Personalization Server (PPS) which costs $1350? This does look really nice, but I really wish the ruby PDF::Writer could import pdfs. :(
