Thats why your seeing the error I would have thought. what happens if you try to vist yourdomain.com/path/to/your/image.gif Do you just see the error? If thats the case its 100% being handed to mongrel when it shouldn't be. Also, I too find typo to be a bit slower im not quite sure why that is, my guess would be something to do with the way it loads its themes.
